American Lead Poisoning Help Association, Inc.

You are not alone anymore...

Welcome to ALPHA.

Lead poisoning is the number one preventable childhood disease in the United States.

In May of 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lowered the level of lead in the bloodstream to 5 micrograms per deciliter (5 µg/dl).  Any child with a blood lead level (BLL) of 5 µg/dl is considered to have lead poisoning and public health actions should be initiated. According to the CDC, these new guidelines increase the number of children affected by lead exposure to 442,000.

The CDC states:  "Lead poisoning can affect nearly every system in the body. Because lead poisoning often occurs with no obvious symptoms, it frequently goes unrecognized."

Many falsely believe that lead poisoning was eradicated after lead was removed from paint (1978), gasoline and soldered canned goods. Unfortunately, our children live in a toxic soup of chemicals, heavy metals and other poisonous substances every day.  Lead is a neurotoxin that gets deposited in bones, soft tissue, and organs which, when ingested or inhaled, causes damage to the nervous system.  Among other things, elevated lead levels can also cause dietary deficiencies of iron, calcium, zinc, and ascorbate, behavioral problems, lowered IQ, and hearing loss.  To learn more about lead and lead poisoning click here.

The CDC's set a goal to eradicate lead poisoning by the year 2010, but that goal was not met. Children, animals, and our environment are still being affected by heavy metal exposure and poisoning.  This indicates that more work needs to be done to help make this goal a reality.

ALPHA is comprised of parents and concerned individuals from all over the country dedicated to the prevention of childhood lead poisoning.  ALPHA's goal is to unite people to network, share ideas and experiences, and move forward in promoting lead awareness within our communities.

ALPHA is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization Incorporated in the state of New Jersey in 2007.

Thank you!

We at The American Lead Poisoning Help Association would like to thank everyone who has supported us in building this organization. We appreciate the comments we receive and welcome all suggestions, especially those that help us find new and better ways to provide information about lead exposure and poisoning.

We appreciate your patience while we work to build our new website. We have plans to add additional features including a monthly spotlight covering topics which include Neurology , Neuropyschology, Health and Nutrition, and Education. Our goal is to provide as much information as we can to help prevent lead exposure and poisoning, and to help assist those who are dealing with family members who have been exposed to lead.

As we continue to make improvements to our site, please take a moment to send us your feedback and suggestions. We appreciate the time you take to visit our site and we want to make your visit a positive one. Helping us understand what you would like to see on our site can help us all reach our goal of eradicating this wholly preventable disease.

ALPHA would not be able to sustain itself without the generosity of our supporters. We thank all of you for your support in 2011 and hope that you will continue to support us in 2012. Even the smallest donation goes a long way toward helping us reach our goals.

We wish you a Happy, Healthy, and Lead-Free New Year!

With many thanks,

Michele Gaffney
